Work grant vs. tax refund — what's the difference?

Two different routes to get money back from the Israel Tax Authority

    🎁

    Work grant

A top-up income for low-to-medium earners ("negative income tax"). It doesn't depend on how much tax you paid — it's enough that your income is within the range and your family makeup fits. Paid in 4 installments a year.

    💸

    Tax refund

A refund of tax that was over-withheld — because of a job change, part-time work, multiple employers, pension deposits, unused credit points and more. You can file up to 6 years back.

    You can get both

The work grant and a tax refund are not mutually exclusive. Many families qualify for both in the same year. The check here examines both routes in parallel.

    Glossary

    Key terms worth knowing

Before you file — here are the main terms in the world of grants and tax refunds.

Negative Income Tax מס הכנסה שלילי
The professional name for the work grant. Instead of the worker paying tax, the state pays them a supplement — to reward work and reduce poverty among low-wage workers.
    Credit Point נקודת זיכוי
A fixed reduction in tax payable. In 2026 a point is worth about ₪2,904 per year (about ₪242 per month). A resident receives 2.25 points, a woman 2.75, and children entitle you to additional points.
    Tax Coordination תיאום מס
A request to the Tax Authority to correctly split the withholding between several employers / income sources. Without it, each employer withholds as if it were the only one — causing over-withholding of tax.
    Tax Refund החזר מס
A refund of tax withheld beyond what was due. It results from inaccurate withholding during the year, unused credit points or qualifying deposits. Filed in an annual return or a dedicated request.
    Single Parent הורה יחיד
A parent who raises children alone and bears the main financial burden. For the work grant they enjoy a wider income range and a higher grant amount, and are also entitled to additional credit points.
    Study Fund קרן השתלמות
A savings vehicle with tax benefits. Independent deposits (mainly for the self-employed) are recognized as a deduction, and the gains are tax-exempt up to a ceiling — a common source of tax refunds.
New Immigrant Credit זיכוי לעולה חדש
A new immigrant is entitled to additional credit points in their first years (spread over 3.5 years). They are usually not applied automatically and can qualify you for a significant tax refund.
    Annual Report דו״ח שנתי
A filing to the Tax Authority covering all income and deductions for the year. The self-employed are required to file it; employees can file it to claim a tax refund. Can be filed up to 6 years back.

    Frequently asked questions

What is the work grant and who is eligible for it?+
The work grant ("negative income tax") is an income top-up from the Israel Tax Authority for low-to-medium-wage employees and self-employed people. Eligible: an Israeli resident aged 21+ who is a parent of children, or aged 55+ even without children, or a person with a disability — whose monthly income is within the range (about ₪2,450–7,289 for a parent, and a wider range for a single parent, up to about ₪13,660).
How much money can I receive?+
The average work grant is about ₪4,000 per year, but parents of children and single parents receive higher amounts (an increased grant of 150%). A tax refund can range from hundreds of shekels up to tens of thousands, depending on the reason and the years examined (up to 6 years back).
What is the deadline to file?+
The work grant is claimed up to two years after the end of the tax year (for example, for 2025 — until the end of 2026, and even a little beyond). A tax refund can be requested up to 6 years back. It's best not to wait — every year that passes may close.
How do I apply for the work grant?+
Employees — at a post office branch or on the Tax Authority website; self-employed — after filing the annual return. You fill out a claim form, attach income confirmations and a bank account number. The grant is paid in 4 installments over the year directly to your account.
What can cause a tax refund?+
The common causes: changing jobs mid-year, working part of the year or part-time, several employers without a tax coordination, independent deposits to a pension/study fund, unused credit points for children/new immigrant/disability, and donations to recognized institutions (Section 46).
    Is the check here accurate?+
No — this is a preliminary estimate only, meant to tell you whether it's worth checking in depth. An accurate calculation requires complete data (both spouses' incomes, all tax years, actual deductions) and depends on personal circumstances. For a binding calculation, consult a certified accountant or the Israel Tax Authority.
